Subject Description

Chemistry serves as a continuation of the Science (S1-3) Curriculum. Students can develop the necessary scientific knowledge and understanding, skills and processes, embedded in the area of “The Material World”. The curriculum will prepare students for entering tertiary courses, vocation-related courses or the workforce in various fields related to chemistry.  Due to the emergence of rapid technological innovation, Chemistry can develop students’ critical thinking and broaden their scope of knowledge. It can help students pursue their career in fields of science, technology, industry and commerce.

Not only Chemistry can serve as one of the elective subjects to fulfill the university entrance requirements, it is also the prerequisite for some specific subjects such as Medicine, Pharmacy, Dentistry, Chinese Medicine, Food and Nutritional Science. Chemistry can also serve as the foundation for students to further their studies and careers in fields of forensic science, environmental science, medical science, biotechnology, engineering, industry and commerce.

Objectives

The aims of Chemistry are to develop scientific literacy and to prepare students for the society with highly competitive integrated economy and rapid technological innovations.

Many novel issues, such as “melamine”, “nanotechnology”, “trans fats” and “photochemical smog”, require students to have basic chemistry knowledge in order to comprehend.

Through Chemistry, students deal with the composition, structures and properties of matter; and the interactions between different types of matter, and the relationship between matter and energy. In addition, students can be aware of science-technology-society-environment (STSE) connections of contemporary issues.
